Benefactor of this Village

(Contact Mick Hambidge on 01367 860381 for details)

We would like to thank everyone who so generously sponsored us on our Four Broadshire Mills Walk to help raise money for an official Blue Plpaque in memory of the late Sir Stafford Cripps for all he did for Filkins.

And a special thank you both to the Ernest Cook Trust and to the St Filica Society for their kind donations.

Thanks also to all who walked with us and those who followed. We raised a final total of nearly £800 altogether.

The Plaque was unveiled on the Village Centre in Filkins on Saturday 7th July 2007, with a short dedication by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Sir Hugo Brunner.

Dennis, Roy, Mike and Mick

The Gentlemen completed their Sponsored Walk on Sunday April 1st, meeting their target for raising funds to pay for the Blue Plaque in memory of the late Sir Stafford Cripps which is to be placed on the Vilage Centre at a ceremony in June. The total distance round the Four Broadshire Watermills was nearly five and a half miles, and it took them altogether just over four and a half hours.

First stop was at Little Faringdon Mill, followed by Broadwell Mill, Filkins Mills and Broughton Poggs Mill. For the mill-minded, the wonderful iron water wheel is at Broadwell Mill (which is near Langford), where owner Mike Simpson made the Gentlemen most welcome and showed them the old remaining mill machinery. Another photograph shows the Gentlemen are standing on the wood and iron bridge over the mill race at Broughton Poggs.

The Great Hedge House Hunt

I'm sure it was in here somewhere
The Great Hedge House Hunt
Spread out, chaps, and look for clues

The Hedge House (otherwise spelt Hadge or Hades) is sadly just an almost invisible little pile of stones now, but half a century ago it was one of a few small cottages just over the fields on the other side of the stream to the west of Filkins. Well known local family names, such as Puffitt and Flux, as well as the experiences of some prisoners of war towards the end of WW2, are associated with this forgotten part of the village

Picture of Roy

Roy is certainly not out of puff on his 70th birthday. The Gentlemen later helped him celebrate with a slice of cake and a cup of cocoa all round.
