FILKINS Family

A Note from the Webmaster:

We hear from folks named Filkins (or variations of spelling like Philkyns or Fillikins) quite often, especially from the USA, where I am told Filkins is the 12,428th most popular surname. However, a gentleman from Australia has suggested that we set up the website to include a contact and/or message exchange, and I have to say I am very tempted by the idea of establishing a worldwide network of Filkins's. Part of his e-mail is reproduced below:

Being a generation or two removed out here in Australia I was wondering .... could you possibly have a Filkins Away registry for those of us who can only visit (maybe once-in-a-lifetime) your (our) town of Filkins. I am sure (and in fact know) many Filkins have visited bringing home a photo of themselves draped over your towns signage.

So, if your name is (or was) Filkins or something like it
let's hear from you !

Hello,
My name is Kelly Filkins and my husband's name is Christopher.  We live near Buffalo, NY, USA.  I happened upon your site a couple of years ago while trying to find out more about my husband's lineage, and decided to try to find the web site again because I'm happy to say that we're planning a trip to England this April!  We are eager to visit the town with which we share a name!  I think your web site is incredible!  We hope to meet you soon!

We look forward to welcoming you both to our Village!. (ed.)

3rd February. 2008

Good Afternoon,
My name is Duane Filkins and I live in Lawrence, Kansas USA.
My daughter happened upon the website and passed it along to me.
I was very happy to finally see photos of the village.
I have been awareof it's existence for some time as a result of researching our heritage.
We have most of the information from after the family came to the United States
in the late 1700's but very little from England.
May God bless you all and perhaps someday my family will 'drop-in' for a visit.
Respectfully yours
Duane Filkins

28 July 2007

just found your web site while on my lunch break here in Downey, California. It is particularly interesting to me as my name is James Andrew FILKINS. Just yesterday a friend of mine, who was born in England and has property there, invited me to spend some time in your country next time he travels abroad.

When I come to England, I am very much looking forward to visiting the fair people and obviously beautiful village that has given my family its proud name.

God Bless,
James Andrew Filkins

I am an American whose maiden name was Filkins. I knew nothing about my name except that it was English. Imagine my surprise to learn there is a village in England called Filkins. From what I see on your website, it looks to be a very lovely village, one I would love to visit one day.

Thank you. Finding your website certainly put a smile on my face.

Here is an extract from a letter we received from Clive Filkins, Australia.

Apparently the Filkins's who are in the US mostly originated from the Mayflower tours. Our family of Filkins started out here with my grandfather in the early 1900's. A search through the phone books in my teenage years found only our extended family. Now there are quite a few more listed. No one can connect a Filkins with your town directly from my research. So maybe it could be all the Filkins that visit your site. Reverse founders - I like the idea. Or maybe I've been too much drinking and dancing lately.

Cheers,

Clive

I’ve enjoyed perusing your website.

Having been a Filkins for most of natural life, I found it very interesting to discover your community. What I thought was an uncommon last name is apparently not so uncommon. I’m a Police Officer with the Illinois State Police.

My question is, are there Officers or other officials there that could give me details on accomodations should I make the trek there?

I thank you for your consideration.

David Filkins

Dexter Filkins, of course, is well-known as the New York Times' correspondent in Baghdad. Our best wishes go to him.
