As we are all aware some 40 houses is Filkins & Broughton Poggs were flooded or had water damage in July 2007. A list has been posted in the Village Shop please add any properties we may have missed off
The Parish Council has been working with the Environment Agency, WODC,
Oxfordshire County Council and those residents affected to see if anything can be done to prevent such widespread flooding in the future.
There has been some progress: the brook at Broughton Poggs Mill will be dredged after April 2008, some ditches have been cleared and drains cleaned out. We know this is only a start.
There are many theories concerning the flooding and where the water went to and came from so to resolve this and give us a solid line to work from the Parish Council will be employing a Hydrologist who will survey the whole of Filkins, Broughton Poggs and the approaching roads and verges. This report will then be used to assess what works can be carried out at District Council and County Council level and how we can help ourselves within our own boundaries. This report will be done as a matter of urgency. The Parish Council also attended a meeting in Kelmscott village hall arranged by David McFarlane our District Councillor with various agencies attending. We will be working with them to identify ownership of ditches around our village and WODC will also be preparing individual Parish Flood Defence reports.
WODC have published their interim report which is available on their website www.wodc.gov.uk follow the link flooding. There was heavy rain forecast for the weekend of 19th January and sand was delivered to The Five Alls Car Park and Broughton Poggs, bags are available at The Five Alls and Glebe Cottage, B Poggs

The Story of the Flood
Filkins and Broughton Poggs failed to escape the consequences of the great downpour on Friday 20th July, with Brize Norton recording 137mm of rainfall. The flow of water in the Broadwell Brook exceeded to capacity of the bridge at Broughton Poggs Mill leading to the closure of the road. Although BP took the brunt of nature’s wrath, with the fields unable to contain the deluge and the roads turning into torrents, properties all over Filkins also suffered.
As befits a “Village of the Year” households lucky enough to stay dry opened their homes, providing beds to some and meals to others. We wish all those affected, especially those who have had to move out a speedy return to normal.
