2010 Activities

Once again, we had a busy and interesting time in 2010. There was an excellent turn out for our Planning Meeting in January, where various ideas were put forward for the coming year. Throughout the year when members hosted meetings in their homes, others baked delicious cakes to enjoy with the tea.

Members produced a leaflet of tips to share with each other and these included: ideas on how to deal with slugs; how to encourage wildlife into the garden; ways of splitting perennials; a reminder of the value of composting; the use of fine plastic mesh in the base of outdoor pots to keep out woodlice; tips on how to use hydrangeas for flower arrangements and recycling ideas using plastic bottles for watering hanging baskets, egg trays for chitting potatoes and old supermarket plastic containers as greenhouse seed trays.

The highlight of our Gardening Club year was the well-supported Annual Plant Sale in May, where sufficient money was raised to support the Hall's refurbishment programme by paying for a wall-mounted hot water heater. During the summer, members voted on how the remainder of the Club funds should be spent. As a result, the ground was cleared and planted by the Village Centre and the small area outside the Village Hall continued to be made attractive with colourful plants. The Gardening Club bought and gave away a number of daffodil bulbs which were planted around the villages by residents of Filkins and Broughton Poggs. We look forward to seeing them blooming in the spring.

Different members organized trips and groups went to the Malvern Spring Show, to the garden at Stone House, to the Whichford Pottery and to Buscot House and Park.

In June we hired a mini-bus to take us up to London to visit the Chelsea Physic Garden and enjoyed a splendid lunch hosted by one of our members. August saw quite a view of us sampling the delights of His Royal Highness' gardens at Highgrove, a very interesting experience.

At the beginning of July, St Filica organized a two day celebration of the Village Centre to mark its 80th year. Part of this celebration was a bowls competition. Of course the Gardening Club entered a team and wore beautifully designed and hand painted tee-shirts, courtesy of one of our talented members. We certainly looked the part even if we did not win the competition.

Members met in November to review the year and, as I write this in January 2011, we are looking forward to the year turning full circle as we will be holding our annual Planning Meeting this month soon and deciding what to do this year.
