Filkins Art Exhibition
Held as part of the150th anniversary celebrations of St Peter’s Church in Filkins the village’s first Art exhibition opened its doors at 10 o’clock on Saturday. The exhibition of paintings, sculpture, textiles, needlework, floral art, and jewellery displayed a variety of work and styles by artists, all from the two villages of Broughton Poggs & Filkins.
The works, including precisely executed botanical illustrations, watercolour paintings of the village, hand made ball gowns, intricately woven textiles and cast-bronze sculptures made a striking and colourful juxtaposition against the traditional ecclesiastical setting.
The exhibition was the culmination of several months’ preparations with final staging on Friday; when for a few hours the church, normally a haven of tranquillity, buzzed with activity as the exhibitors put finishing touches to their displays.
Over two days the exhibition attracted nearly two hundred visitors; some coming from quite a distance. Several of the artists sold items of their work and the Church also benefited from the visitors’ generosity.
