Villagers Become
Artists for the Day
Added: 19th July, 2008
The Villagers of Filkins & Broughton came along to the Green in front of the Village Hall today to become artists for the day under the tutelage of out Resident painters Ronnie & Ian Bailey.
A picture called "Farmer's garden with sunflowers" by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was chosen for the subject matter and was divided up into 35 pieces; one for each artist to paint. When all the pictures had been completed they were put together in one large masterpiece.
Pictures can be seen below and the final picture will be available for all to see in the Village Hall on Saturday 26th July during the Street Party.

Locals Go Barking Mad
in Village Playground
Saturday 21st June
On a wet Saturday morning in June a group of villagers armed with wheelbarrows and shovels invaded the village playground and dumped around eight tons of bark chippings around the climbing frames and swings. The chippings are there, of course, to provide safe and soft landing to those using the equipment, but the previous layer had worn down and needed replacing. With regular refreshments being supplied from the Village Shop, the workers shifted all the bark from the shop's car park around to the playground by hand and raked it out flat.
Some person only known as the web master turned up with a sick note to get out of the heavy work and took some pictures.

National Gardens Scheme
1st June, 2008
Sunday (1st June) started wet but by the afternoon everything was dry and the visitors started to arrive... and they didn't stop coming all afternoon. I have never seen so many people in the village at one time.
All the gardens that were opened were absolutely wonderful; the colours and scents of the flowers were a delight to the senses and it was plain to see that everyone had put a tremendous effort into every square foot of their gardens.
One visitor has taken the trouble to e-mail the web site with his praise and I have put it on the letters page.
The Village owes a big thank you to everyone who opened their gardens and to those who provided tea and cakes in the Village Hall.
Below are some pictures taken by Paul Thompson at the very successful National Garden Scheme open day. If you have any you wish to add, please e-mail them to me at webmaster@filkins.org.uk
WhitSunday Walk & Picnic
The weather was glorious on Sunday, 11th May – perfect for our walk to John’s Wood just outside Filkins. 20 people took part, including 6 children, some riding up to the wood on their bikes. After eating lunch (which was remarkably well organised in the case of one couple!), children and adults followed a treasure map, gathering various nature items along the way. We were delighted to see newts in the pond and only some of us ended up with muddy wet feet. On the way back to the picnic area the children were delighted to discover Easter Eggs secreted among the trees, which provided amusement for young and not so young. A happy band of parishioners wended their way back to the village full of food, fun and friendship.
Filkins Cinema Club
The Filkins Cinema club has had to close down due to lack of attendees and rising costs.
It is hoped that the cinema can be re-started in the future if a way can be found to reduce costs and increase the attendance.
if you have any suggestions that may help the new club then please contact Andy Hoad.
Thank you
