Bowling Tournament

Bowls picture 1

The 19th of June 2011 – another True Amateur Bowling tournament in Filkins.
Congratulations to 'The Unusual Suspects' – with Paul 'Fantastic' Floyd, Oliver 'Daring' Dallyn, Ben 'Magnificent' Morley and Paul 'Sensational' Sherratt – this year's winners! They have done it in style! They gracefully accepted the cup from Doug Jackson – long time President of Filkins Bowls Club.

The weather on the day was good – not too hot to tire the players and not too windy to steer the bowls off their course.

Mr Hog from Saddlers granted us with his special appearance – his presence was well appreciated and everyone enjoyed a hog sandwich (for all the children who read this – yes, Mr Hog died of old age). We also managed to have a pint or two of bitter, despite the barrel trying to make a bid for freedom at the start of the day. Luckily, it has been saved by swift action from the organizers – just imagine, so much drink could have gone to waste! For those with a sweet tooth there was a vast selection on home baked cakes and muffins – provided by local volunteers – and teas and coffees served by our
usual supporters, Sheila, Ena, Sue and Debbie. Thank you very much Ladies, for looking after us! By the way – if I could have a recipe for the almond slice that would be fab!

To keep the children occupied and away from the bowling action – there was a circus skills practice and face painting available. I believe we had a Panda, a Lion and a Tiger having a stroll around the audience later in the day! Oh, and a Butterfly… I think… Thank you very much Pat for securing the grant for us and Ruth for her help!

I know bowling does not sound exciting – and I don't know anything about the game or bowling techniques. As a woman I find such big bowls a little awkward to handle. Curled palm, straight palm – aim straight, aim at angle – throw, push… oh, whatever – I believe that day was about having a great
time with local folks and meeting old and new friends. But as I watched people playing and having good time – I decided to join the game next year.

So a BIG thank you to everyone who participated – by playing the game, setting up or putting down the marquee – and serving the food.

See you next year!

Duck Race
2010

The sun shone and the Pimms glimmered in the glasses alongside the delicious duck pancakes – what a setting for this year’s Duck Race. The 5 Alls supplied some refreshements and wonderful duck shaped biscuits and cakes decorated with ducks were made by Pat and Ruth Gibson.

It was simply ‘quacking’! Sorry – but not as bad as Phil Dunmall’s puns during the Commentary!

In all, 288 little yellow plastic ducks awaited their bi-annual dipping in the Broadwell Brook - some faired better than others. Some (like the ones I bought) did not seem to wake up even after the icy splash.
Still, there were some lucky winners. The heats were won by Era Glyn Owen, No 36, Suzanne Dore, No 67, Tim Lush, No 101, Andre Vazquez, No 193, Frank Smith No 203, and Alysia Callum, No 275. The winners in the final were 1st Eva Glyn Owen, 2nd Mike from the 5 Alls; last duck Adam Macer. The “Guess the placing of Punk Duck” in the final race was won by Kat Hoad.

Well done to all and thank you all for your support and
making it a bumper year for duck sales.
